Santa Catalina Beach / Stagging Area

Playa Santa Catalina/ Santa Catalina Beach...the view from Piguino's Café.

Welcome to Santa Catalina...the Stagging Area!!

The small fishing village of Santa Catalina is your gateway to observing Coiba’s natural wonders/avifauna.  Located in the ‘buffer’ zone of the park, Santa Catalina is the departure option closest to Coiba Nationa Park.  Considered in the recent past primarily as a remote location for feral wave riders, Sta Catalina is currently on the 'rise'.  With three dive shops, a handful of lodging options, local sport fishing operators and a good variety of restaurants, this little fishing village is transitioning into an internationally desired travel destination.  For more information on Santa Catalina and directions on how to get there please visit

Launching & Landing

After a long road trip, a nice dinner, and a sound sleep you will be ready to depart to Coiba National Park!

You and your group will meet Javier the evening of your arrival.  For practicality this can be done over an early/sunset meeting at Pinguino's Cafe. Located at the end of the road, this little restaurant overlooks the town's main beach and river: exactly where we will be boarding our launch to Coiba. The Island of Coiba is, more often than not, in view from here ...outlined on the horizon and 23 miles away.  We will go over trip logistics, safety precautions, itinerary options, tides, current weather predictions and any last minute details concerning your trip.  We will also go over how to efficiently 'get in' and 'get out' of our boat...safely!

If you are not a born sailor...not to worry. You are in the hands of professionals! Javier and the appointed captain will assist you according to plan. This will make for easy and safe boarding. 'Water' shoes are nice to have and recommended as part of your Bird Coiba gear.

Calm waters at 'Playa Gambute'  ANAM Station.
Morning cruise up Estero Boca it!
Transportation to and from Coiba is done in locally owned 23-26' fiberglass boats.  Your boat will come with bimini /shade top, cushioned bench style seats (w/back rest), new four stroke motor, VHF marine radios, compass, life vests, and all required safety gear.  The crew will consist of Javier, a local licensed boat captain, you/your group, and a cook for multiple day tours. Our boat speed will adjust according to weather conditions.  Bird Coiba strives for safe and comfortable birding tours.
Six adult visitors max per Bird Coiba Tour.

Two to four adults per Bird Coiba Tour highly recommended.

Most trips make the run from Santa Catalina to the ANAMA Station Park Headquarters (23 miles) in an hour and a half. This time can greatly increase due to cetacean observation.  Humpbacks in particular migrate to the calm warm waters of Coiba National Park from August to December...primarily to calf!  After aproximately four months the calves are ready to make the migration back to their primary feeding grounds closer to the poles
